For my printmaking class, I made a zine about the implications of self tan to provoke a new perspective and discussion. I saw this as a great opportunity to create something that sheds light on an unchallenged and neglected facet of society.
The text is accompanied by imagery that encompasses various elements, such as depictions of skin, tan lines, the application of tanning mousse, and the process of tanning itself. Additionally, the inclusion of green duotone pictures featuring the Palawan peacock, a native bird of the Philippines, and a drawing of a tamaraw serves to emphasize the essence of the Filipino environment.
The colored picture of a girl in a kitchen captures my cousin within the walls of the house where our parents grew up, and I sourced it from my Lula's picture book, creating a personal connection to the narrative. The lighter background pictures portraying water and lush vegetation further enhance the imagery, highlighting the essence of paradise, island life, and a tropical setting. These images are instrumental in selling the cultural fantasy and idealized concept embedded in brand names and marketing strategies.
